Building work to begin on Saltdean Lido and temporary library relocation

Following building surveys in the summer to understand more about the state of the structure, plans to start the Saltdean Lido restoration process are now in place.

Specialist contractors will be working to remove asbestos from the old plant room which was originally used to heat and treat the original pool.

There will be a second contractor working in conjunction with the asbestos team that will dismantle, demolish and remove all the old tanks and pipework.

Library temporary relocation

Whilst asbestos is being removed the library will be relocated and Brighton and Hove City Council will be running a reduced service from a temporary building close to the existing library.

The Saltdean Lido CIC is tendering for a main contractor and plans to appoint the company to start the work in January with the main building nearing completion in Spring 2023 and opening again in the second quarter of 2023 (timing depends on availbale funds).

The pool should remain open in 2022

The pool should be open as normal in 2022 although there will be a temporary entrance created as the existing double gates will be used by the contractors. The CIC plans for the pool to be open more months either next year or when the building is open.

The plans for the new Lido include:

  • Creating a year-round café bar with access to the Rotunda and sun decks

  • Multiple community spaces and kitchenette

  • Multi-purpose Ballroom available for weddings, corporate hire, pop-up restaurant and community events

  • Exercise Studio

  • Shared Workspace

  • Heritage Learning Zone

  • Restored Library
