Brighton and Hove City Council Environment, transport and sustainability committee considered a proposal on Tuesday 17th Jan to permanently close the public toilets at Ovingdean Beach, Rottingdean beach and Saltdean Park due to funding limitations in the 2023/24 budget. There are 18 public toilets proposed for closure including those at Rottingdean Recreation Ground; Preston Park Chalet; and King Alfred.
No decision was made in the meeting about closures, with more discussion to be had before a decision is made. A proposal to make charges at some remaining toilets was rejected.
Councillor Bridget Fishleigh is taking advice on how to fight the closures.
In the meantime there is an e-petition you can sign. The petition is called ‘proposed closures of public toilets’ and you can access it using the link below. The petition is open until 8th Feb 2023.
