Peacehaven Community Supermarket new Meridian Centre location serving free jacket potato & hot drink

Peacehaven Community Supermarket's new Meridian Centre location is serving a free jacket potato and hot drink to members on Thursdays from 11am to 1.30pm as well as providing healthy & delicious food and access to toiletries, sanitary products, as well as some cleaning, washing products and toilet roll. The supermarket moved to Community House in Peacehaven's Meridian Centre from Kempton House in February and staff and volunteers from the Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) are on hand to offer advice.

Members are asked to contribute on a pay as you feel basis which means that they can decide what to pay, based on what they feel able to contribute and it is understood that sometimes that might be nothing at all. Anyone can join by giving your name and signing a form.

There are lots of fresh fruit and vegetables with tomatoes and potatoes being the most popular products bought. Supplies are laid out throughout the opening hours to ensure that there is something for everybody. Some toiletries and pet food are available to.

Cllr. Cathy Gallagher said, "Peacehaven Community Supermarket has been a successful and busy social venture and it's great to see it in its new location in Community House in the Meridian Centre really busy with people sitting inside and out having their food and drink.

"They've been really busy over the last few months due to the cost of living increases and they're pleased to be able to offer a service that reduces the need for foodbank use with members able to choose from a range of food and other items, so that they get the food their family enjoy most."

Food is sourced from FareShare who are building connections with local food businesses. Local residents are encouraged to share their own surplus food, so that nothing goes to waste.

Tea and coffee is served alongside the community supermarket so people can stay for a cuppa and a chat as well. Social interactions are a key part – it is important everyone feels welcome and supported. It’s about getting food onto people’s tables, but it’s so much more than that as well.
